Galileo is the European Union's alternative to the US GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite navigation system.
It will allow people to pinpoint their location anywhere on Earth with an unprecedented level of accuracy.
When Galileo reaches full operational capability in 2008 its 30 satellites will provide coverage of even the most remote parts of the globe. Up until now, coverage of latitudes beyond 75 degrees north has been patchy at best. Now users in the North Cape area and beyond can use satellite navigations with more confidence.
Galileo will help us to navigate seas better; fly a safer, less delayed flight path; locate stolen vehicles; save lives by quick responses to large-scale accidents; guide the visually impaired; and locate lost mountaineers. The usefulness of Galileo is so great that its potential still hasn't been mapped.
